Saturday 18th August 2007

The 1st day in the Evening Series for The Conder Trophy had not been contested. The 2nd scheduled day took place on Sunday evening 22 July.

In bracing conditions, light rain and generally overcast sky five boats raced round the marks in races 3 and 4, the last in this year’s Evening Series for the Conder Trophy.

Owen Smith was Officer of the Day and I was on standby for the Rescue Boat.

To try to simulate open racing starts, many boats, we used inner limits. The start was the transit line and the limit was the new mark ‘T’ and the shore. The course for the first race was Tp, Fp, Ep, Ds, Is, Ks, Tp – 2 laps.

T is the mark is outside the OOD box roughly on the start transit – T for transit.

The longest course this season, mark E being across from Sunderland village and mark K at the entrance to the river Conder.

This course favoured Frank’s Dart 15 for the first time and consequently Frank led from Start to finish building up a considerable lead. Sadly he missed out mark D on both laps as did Mark and Nick. Andy crossed the start line the wrong side of T. All four were then deemed to have ‘retired’ rather than being penalized with disqualification. Giles was the only one to sail the correct course nevertheless they all enjoyed the new longer laps, despite not earning points they enjoyed pitting their skills against one another.

The second race was a more usual course. Again we restricted the start line to between mark T and a black can (disused mooring marker) 18p, Cs, Fs, Ts - 3 laps.

I didn’t watch this race as I was painting letters on new mark buoy T, assisted by Alison. I think it was all decided on the first windward leg when Mark chose to tack the opposite way to the others at the start.
