Sunday 29th July 2007

Summer at last? Today’s racing took place in glorious sunshine and fresh to strong breezes, westnorthwesterly becoming westerly.

I decided it was too windy for me so I volunteered to OOD. John Rushton helped in the OOD box.

Anne and Paul sailed off upstream and Owen sailed off towards the lighthouse.

The wind was easterly force 1 to 2. Pleasant conditions, a little sun.

The first race got underway a little late. Wind westnorthwest F5, F6 at times. On the first lap Ivan decided that his aches and pains made it wise to retire – he’s been sailing every day recently. At last the conditions suited Frank on the Dart except it’s doesn’t tack as well as the single hulled boats. Mark completed the 3 laps first and also won after handicap. Robert was a good second.

Result – First Race, Race 4 in the Series

Robert in a quieter moment, first race

Mark

Frank

Andy in one of his better moments

The wind increased slightly and backed to west, still F5 occasionally F6, for the second race.

Second Race.

Mark again led from the front but this time Robert managed to squeeze in front after handicap. Robert won by 3 hundredths of a second and considering the accuracy of our timing, to the nearest second if we are lucky, it is not really fair to say he won but that’s what the calculator said and he sailed well, Mark was happy to let him have the result.

Result – Second Race, Race 5 in the Series

The competitors all thoroughly enjoyed the racing in the testing conditions. Even Andy who spent a lot of the second race in the water. I’m full of admiration for all of them, makes me think I should start working on my cruiser again. Nick was again missed. Frank also acquired a Blaze last week which he’s going to practice on in lighter winds before he takes it out on days like today. Frank, at 71, is our oldest racer at the moment.
