The 4th Frostbite Sunday

Sunday 13th November 2011 - Glasson Sailing Club

Another sunny day, making a lovely sunny weekend.  Michael was OOD for the day, thank you.  Ivan crewed the Patrol Boat, without which racing would not have been allowed to take place because of the weather conditions - many thanks Ivan.

Ivan braving the cold, it is really cold sitting in the Patrol Boat in strong winds!

Robin W - OK: Anthony & Kath – YWDB; Ian & Barbara Sharples – GP14; John Glynn & John Howarth - Bosun; Jeff & Val Simpkin - Lune Pilot and Chris Elleray – Mirror, all turned up to race.

The Barratts and the Simpkins decided their boats, as rigged to date, weren't suitable for the wind strength so they elected not to launch.  Ian & John reefed their mains but Robin persevered with his full main.

The wind was mostly east F3-4 gusting F5-6.  We started the races into the wind, i.e. upstream - course: Tp - Gp - Ap & Tp.

We decided to do three laps for Robin and two for the others.  We started promptly.  Chris launched and intended racing but decided to retire.

The race was over in 29 minutes so we decided to keep the same course, and because of the conditions keep to the 3 and 2 lap format to give a rest in between races.  As it turned out this gave time for a third race.

For the second and third races the wind eased but was still gusty

Chris didn't start the second race and there were crew changes as follows: GP14 - Ian Sharples & Jessica

For the third race Grant joined the Johns and Barbara replaced Jessica. The Johns and Grant decide to retire but they stayed on the water and enjoyed practicing, sailing up and down.

It's not all over yet!  The Patrol Boat has to be washed down, the engine flushed with fresh water and put away in the garage.  Similarly the Quad Bike has to be washed down and locked away.

All the sailors were glad they'd made he effort to get on the water.

The Series Points Table may be confusing.  We only count your best 55% of the races won, which in effect means half plus 1.  So as six races have taken place so far only your best four races are added up to make the total points.

The next Frostbit Sunday is 27th November, first race starting at 1100 hours - Owen is going to be OOD - I've got to go down south for the weekend but I'll be back for the last races on Decenber 11th.

Yesterday only Michael ad Ivan were sailing.  Michael sailed round the lighthouse on the Topper ,the first time this year that he's venture so far on the dinghy.

New Year's Day to Easter - Ian & Barbara, John & John, Ivan and myself are looking forward o racing after Christmas in the North West Icicle Series.  Robin is also keen but doesn't want to travel all the way down from Cockermouth and find that there's no one else racing.
