2012 The First Race in the Lighthouse Series

Saturday 7th April 2012 - Glasson Sailing Club

Michael Swarbrick was again OOD, still on antibiotics, and the Patrol Boat was crewed by Doug Gorton and Owen Smith.

The course was set at Ss - Dp - 8s - Hs - 8p - Ds - Ss

Kath has some great photos, perhaps she'll send me a few.

The start was delayed by about 15 minutes in the hope of some wind.  It then looked promising so we started the race!

After 15 minutes (HW-35) all the boats had only drifted up to A!

003cs
At HW-30 Ivan and Anthony appeared to be in the lead but it was hard to say which one because they were so far apart.

004cs
HW-25 - the wind gradually arrived from the west but it became obvious that the boats, with the exception of Steve, Mirror, and John G, Bosun, were heading for mark E. The Bosun went straight for the lighthouse but Steve headed for D.

John, Ian & Barbara, John again - finishing.

The Family Sharples.  Although it looks like open water it is only ankle deep.  Gillian, sailing the Topper for the first time, she was away at university when we had our Junior Sailing Lessons, had gone aground, as did everyone trying to help her.  Look at the first photo to see where the grass is.

At the end of the race only Steve finished, Steve was the only boat to go round race mark D!! so he was declared the winner of the first race in the 2012 Lighthouse Series.

When only Steve got a 'gun' at the end of the race it cause some confusion.  Despite the ruling of the Officer Of the Day, Michael Swarbrick, everyone enjoyed their sail.

016s
Thanks to Doug and Owen who manned the Patrol Boat.

Results - If I've done the calculations right, Steve had the best corrected time even though he sailed a lot further than the others.
As I am a law unto myself, I make the rules up as I go along, I've used the times for the errant boats but doubled their points score, they all enjoyed it and we've got to encourage the newcomers.

Norman and Einar off to Piel - Peter Booth also set of for Piel but my photo of his is small and blurred
