The 1st North West Icicle Sunday

Sunday 8th January 2012 - Glasson Sailing Club

Gales or near gales had been raging for a long time.   But, even though it was dull the wind had dropped to allow the Glasson sailors the chance to take part in the first North West Icicle Sunday.   Mostly westerly varying in strength fro F1 to F3 at times, not really gusting, just going up and down.
The course was Ss - Bs - Gs - Ap - Hs - Ss, where S is the OOD buoy and H is the nearest Dock's channel marker.
It was an early start, which made it difficult for the sailors who live some distancce away - Kendal and the Manchester Region.  There was only three of us so we agreed to time ourselves but as it turned out Michael & Ivan did the timimgs on their stop watches using the lap mode, comparing times afterwards.

We decided to do just one lap for the first race as we were late launching.
We had a confused start but all got away fairly cose together but, as there is a large difference in handicaps, the boats gradually spaced out.  Ivan, Laser, leading, Ian & Jessica, GP14, next with Michael, Topper, trailing in the rear.  A kind of mist surrounded us, not quite rain.
Suddenly Ivan was over, which had a dramatic effect on the result.  After correction, Michael 1st, Ivan 2nd and Ian 3rd.

Ian and Jesssica decided not to take part in the second race.  It was still a bit gloomy but it was good to be sailing.  We used the same course but this time three laps for Ivan and two for Michael.  Michael finished his two laps first but after correction Ivan was the winner.

We were helped ashore and given a lovely hot cup of tea by John Northern Star .  John had brought his boat up to the Club but not all the equipment.  He'll be racing next time, on the 22nd as will Owen and perhaps Martin and Samantha.
