Dawn Chalkley, Juan Pablo Echeverri, Kirsten Glass, Keran James, Tina Keane, Matt Lippiatt, Dawn Mellor, Max Mason, Ron Meerbeek, Kyle Bloxam Mundy, Liz Murray, J.A. Nicholls, Kay Walsh Open Friday to Sunday, 12noon - 6pm, or by appointment. Private view: Thursday 6th December, 6 - 9pm. From 'Grotto' to the ghetto and back to the gutter. After the all-embracing clutter of our last Xmas show 'Grotto', this year studio1.1 is being playfully exclusive in a show turning its post-post-queer gaze to the flux and multiple locations of identity - identity as given/appropriated or deliberately misplaced; we are assembling a group portrait of a divided self. Fractured images of a world where our role-models are in constant meltdown. We have now become the stars we looked up to. (While all the time it's the moon we were asking for.) Is there still a 'gay sensibility'? Or should we run a mile from such categorisation? Just as last year's show was an anti-curatorial experiment (no selection, all-inclusive) this year is an exercise in another arbitrary curatorial decision - all the artists in the show happen to be lesbian or gay but does that make them gay artists? All of them, emerging or established, are professional artists we have already worked with or admired. They have shown or performed throughout the UK and internationally. In proposing the show we have found people variously unhappy or disapproving of the re-ghettoisation we seem to be putting forward. But as long as such disapproval occurs we suggest the question is still worth posing. How much are we keen now to erase the 'sensibility' with which oppression isolated us; or with 'liberation' has it all become mainstream? What is a Gay show? In this case it's just for Xmas, not for life.
