Health Walk - Tuesday 24th October 2017

Today we had twenty-nine walkers, a little less than usual but could that be due to the fact that it was pouring down until a half-hour before the start.  Those that turned out were rewarded by a dry warm walk in pleasant surroundings.

John W was leading the main walk with Lawrence back marking.  Brian L led the Elite group with Peter and Suzi back marking.

John outlined his plans and led us off into the Pinetum

Rene, Suzi and Peter bringing up the rear, all three with chest problems benefitting from taking part in the walks.

The Elite walkers went up to the Viewing Area but John led the main group straight down Cardiac Hill over the Wooden Bridge.

Here John turned right walking along the Cycle Track but Brian led his group left along the Cycle Track and river.

Passing the Covert Pond the main group walked to the road, crossed and marched, well walked, up the Sheep Hill to the top

where the laggards were delayed because of the heavy traffic, a funeral cortege sprung to mind.

Pressing on past the Ponderosa we dropped down to the Kissing Gate into the Field.  Hidden in front of us as we descended through the trees, is Hawksclough Farmhouse, a listed c. 1700 building spotted in the local press by Brian C.  If anyone would like to buy it it is quoted at £275,000.

We continued along Cam Lane through the Field and down to the Kissing Gate to

the Lake.  Here we picked up the trail blazed by the elite walkers who had left the Cycle Track to walk up Cam Lane into the Field and down the steps to the Lake walking round the eastern shore of the Lake.

Both groups descended the Long Steps, walked along the bottom of the Dam towards the Stone Bridge.

Here we met a female person (She may be a lady) who stopped John and asked about the walks.  John referred her to Michael S at the back of the group.  She and her husband, standing a little way off, have just moved into Cuerden Heights and wanted to get to know people and our group seemed a good start to her.  It turns out she is a Health Walk Leader from Blackpool and before that Peterborough and we should see them on Thursday.

By now everyone had crossed the Stone Bridge and were disappearing out of sight.  Michael continued his lonely trek up Snake Hill.
