Health Walk - Tuesday 8th May 2018

Photos by Michael S & Judy - Please click on photos to see a larger one

Today we had fifty-two walkers and Paddy, Geoff's little dog.

It was a lovely morning, overcast a first but we had sunshine later

Michael S led the main walk with Cheryl back marking and Yvonne mid marking.  Brian L led the short option walk with Susan S back marking

We all set off down Snake Hill but the Elite walkers turned off to go round Cuerden Hall and head for the Cinder Path.

We carried on down Snake Hill, over the Stone Bridge and up the slope to the Lake and walked round the east side of the Lake where

we saw the Heron on its nest with at least two chicks, possibly three.

We walked up the steps to Cam Lane, Hawks Clough and up past the Ponderosa, correctly know as Cam Lane Cottage.

We crossed Sheep Hill Lane and entered Sheep Hill Wood

and walked towards 'the top of the world' where I addressed the group and explained that once we crossed back over Sheep Hill Lane into the Central Park I would be going off the official path and on to the beaten path created by the dog walkers.

Yvonne had previously agreed to lead those who didn't wish to be over adventurous back to the Visitors Centre

We crossed the field towards the river and walked along the river, as near as we could get, until we entered the wooded part of the river.  We walked past the

stepping stones, which we used to cross from the other bank,

along my favourite walk.  The bluebells are now out and everywhere in what we think are greater numbers than previous years.

We came out on to the Cycle Track and walked towards the Wooden Bridge

passing the wild garlic or Ramsoms which David B says led to the naming of the town of Ramsbottom.

We crossed the Wooden Bridge and walked up Cardiac Hill taking the first path out of the Pinetum back to the Visitors Centre.

The Elite walkers, leaving Carmel to go down Cuerden Close, having negotiated the Cinder Path with cows on either side of the path between to two fields, Brian kept the cows at bay allowing the walkers to pass safely, walked along the Cycle Track to Cock Cabin Wood.

They walked clockwise round the wood emerging to enter Walkers Wood, crossing the Stone Bridge, walking across the Picnic Area to mount the steps to the Lake.

Walking round the Lake to the south east corner they turned and walked down the Slope to return over the Stone Bridge and walk up Snake Hill back to the Visitors Centre.

Carmel recovering from surgery, keeping to her instructions and not walking up hills, took the path from the little estate to the back of the Barn and walked back to the Visitors Centre.  Feeling well she did the circuit again.

The dotted red line shows the short cut from the main group and the dotted green line shows Carmel's deviation from the short walk.
